Amazon.com Product Description
Strengthen your back, biceps, and other upper body muscles in the comfort of your living room or dorm with the Iron Gym workout bar. Designed to fit conveniently in most doorway frames or sit on the floor for pushups, dips, and sit-ups, the Iron Gym is an ideal choice for people who want to get fit without buying expensive, space-intensive weight sets. When installed in the doorway, the device lets you perform pull-ups and chin-ups, with three grip positions--narrow, neutral, and wide--for working the inner and outer back. Once you're done with your back workout, you can quickly move the Iron Gym to the floor, where you can perform pushups while facing down, tricep dips while facing the other way, or sit-ups using the Iron Gym for foot stability.

The Iron Gym--whose durable steel frame installs quickly without tools or fasteners--holds up to 300 pounds and is designed to fit residential doorways 24 to 32 inches wide, with doorway trim or molding up to 3.5 inches wide.

3 out of 5 stars Doesn't work in my older house   January 9, 2009
R. Dawson
I've got an older (100+ yr) house which apparently has thicker and larger door trim than this is designed for. It won't fit around all of it. Guess I'll have to mount one. Too bad, I like the push up features of this as well.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome chin up bar... get one!!   January 7, 2009
deskcapades (Atlanta, GA United States)
I actually purchased a different product than this one initially, for my almost 13-year-old son for Christmas. After it arrived we realized it wouldn't work for our doorframes so bought this one instead (I did not order from Amazon, though -- got this one from RiteAid for $29.99 and didn't have to pay shipping!)

My son put it together himself in under 10 minutes and is happily chinning away... it is easy to hang and does not mar the doorframes (which makes me -- Mom -- happy!!) And he's getting some fun exercise after school.

I do recommend it and it seems very sturdy. He's 5'6" and weighs about 110 and likes it very much.

I was excited to see this product on tv, but I had some doubts! So I bought it and I put it to the test. By the time it was assembled and installed on the door's frame it was too low to the ground to be effective as a pull up bar even though I am only 5'10"! it also did not feel secure on the frame of the door, and it did not feel safe to use. The bottom line I am not happy with this product and I do not recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Fabbed Extended Long Bar for Iron Gym - Works great!   January 7, 2009

This works like a charm.
I wanted to use this where I workout at also, and it was not wide enough for the doorways.
Tried finding the 'enclosed offer' for the extended long bar but it did not exist. Could not find on Internet either, so I modified it as follows:
Extended Long Bar modification.
Allows Iron Gym to be used in wider doorways!
Parts at Home Depot:
(2)Galvanized 1/2"x12" rigid conduit pipe = $3.31 x2
(2)Galvanized 1/2" Pipe Coupler = $1.33 x2
I have uploaded pics of this in the 'user uploaded images' for the iron gym.

That being said, the Iron Gym works great for me. I use this at home and at the fitness center. I like using at the fitness center because the doorways are wider and taller.

The Iron Gym easily attaches to the clips on my backpack and is light.

I also use 5lbs ankle weights (10lbs total) for added training (but not recommended if you are a beginner)

It is ok for sit-ups but seems to slip up on the door frame. I have to really concentrate on holding it with my feet. Therefore, I do not use it much for this purpose.

I do use it for the push-ups as I can get 'deeper' push ups.

Useless for dips. Commercial cracks me up showing the dips. Dips need to be full range of motion in near upright position which this cannot do.

For doing different pull-ups this is great. I have found that this is identical to the 'Creative Fitness Door Gym' in which they make little extension bars for wider doorways, but have read that the extensions are useless as they barely screw in to the ends of the bars. Actually got the idea for the mod from someone else, but improved on it somewhat.

5 out of 5 stars Get a Multi-function Gym For The Price of a Dumbell!   January 7, 2009
Amorphous (Innsmouth)
I wasn't so sure about this thing. It was easy to assemble. I put it together in about 8-10 minutes. Yet, it seemed flimsy and I was afraid of damage to the doorframe (I live in an apartment). However, it really works as advertised. The way this thing is designed distributes the weight into the sides of the doorframe so your bodyweight is pushing in on the frame and not hanging dead weight. It is really a clever design. It installs in seconds and leaves no damage. It's light weight and compact so there isn't any worry about storage. The push-up function ensures good form because of the hand placement. It allows you to do deep push-ups, and gives you a wider range of motion than simply using a flat surface. You can do wide push-ups as well. It works fairly well for sit-ups too. Yet, I found myself having to stop a couple times to set the bar back even with the floor. Yet, it works better than sticking my feet under the couch (What I did before I got this). The wide pull up function works just fine. I wasn't sure if the hand placement would be sufficient but I could feel the burn after a few reps. The only drawback is the dip function. It doesn't really do anything for you. You really can't get a full range of motion with the device placed on the floor. The workout guide recommends elevating the feet with a stool but it doesn't increase the range of motion in your triceps. You need to elevate the Iron Gym in addition to your feet in order to do dips properly. However, using the device in this manner can be potentially dangerous and result in injury should the device shift position in mid-dip. I don't recommend doing it. There are safer options to doing dips. I was able to do hanging crunches without the ab straps, but I will probably go ahead and get them just because they are only eight bucks with shipping and handling. Overall, I'm satisfied with this purchase. You get a multifuncitoning piece of exercise equipment for the price of a dumbbell. You can't go wrong with this. It works, and you can get a great workout on this thing. I've incorporated it into my warm-up routine. I will still use free weights, but this is a wonderful item. I can see this as a great travel item too. If you go on vacation you can turn any motel doorframe into a gym.
