This list of the top Formula One (F1) racers at the Indy 500 was comprised by racing fans from all over the world, voting at “The Greatest 33″.
1. A.J. Foyt – A.J. Foyt won the Indianapolis 500 four times as well as the Daytona 500 racing stock cars. For he was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2000.
2. Rick Mears – Rick Mears has won the Indy 500 four times and holds the record for first place pole positions with six.
3. Al Unser – Al Unser also won the Indianapolis 500 four times and is the fourth of five people to have one the him race in two consecutive years.
4. Bobby Unser – Bobby Unser, the brother of Al Unser, has won the Indy 500 three times and is one of only two drivers to have won the race in three different decades.
5. Helio Castroneves – Helio Castroneves, a Brazilian racer, has won the great race three times (2001, 2002 and 2009) and as won four pole positions.
6. Johnny Rutherford – Johnny Rutherford has also won the Indianapolis 500 three times ( 1974, 1976 and 1980).
7. Mario Andretti – Mario Andretti has won the Indy 500 one time and is only one of two drivers to win races in NASCAR, Indy Car, Formula One and the World Sportscar championship.
8. Wilbur Shaw – Wilbur Shaw won the great race three times and was the president of Indianapolis Motor Speedway from 1945 to 1954.
9. Bill Vukovich – Known as “The Mad Russian”, Bill Vukovich won the Indianapolis 500 two times (1953 and 1954).
10. Emerson Fittipaldi – Emerson Fittipaldi, another Brazilian racer, has won the Indy 500 twice along with other championships in CART and Formula One.
11. Al Unser Jr. – Al Unser Jr., nephew of Bobby Unser and son of Al Unser, won the great race two times.
12. Louis Meyer – Louis Meyer was the first driver to win the Indianapolis 500 three times (1928 as a rookie, 1933 in 1936).
13. Mauri Rose – Mauri Rose won the Indy 500 three times ( 1941, and back to back wins in 1947 and 1948).
14. Parnelli Jones – Parnelli Jones won the great race in 1963 and has won many races in stock cars, midget cars, sprint cars and Indy cars.
15. Gordon Johncock – Gordon Johncock, won the Indy 500 two times and won the USAC Marlboro Championship Trail in 1976.
16. Arie Luyendyk – Arie Luyendykis is a two-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 and won the European Super Vee Championship.
17. Rodger Ward – Rodger Ward also won the Indy 500 two times in 1959 in 1962.
18. Jim Clark – Jim Clark, British Formula One racer, won the great race in 1965 and 25 other Grand Prix races.
19. Dario Franchitti – Dario Franchitti, a Scottish racer, has won the Indianapolis 500 two times in 2007 and 2010.
20. Tom Sneva – Tom Sneva won the Indy 500 in 1983, and had one the pole position for the race three times.
Perhaps one day we will see Danica Patrick join this list as the first female Indy Car driver or some of the other great Indy drivers like Michael Andretti, Dan Wheldon, Danny Sullivan or Bobby Rahal.
